Frequently Asked Questions
- 01Yes — when fitted correctly, IKEA BILLY bookcases can achieve a true built-in look. The key is expert scribing, custom infills and precise installation, which eliminate gaps and uneven lines. When finished properly, the result looks like it was made specifically for your home — not a flat-pack system.
- 02Not always. To achieve the best proportions and finish, I often combine IKEA BILLY with the IKEA BESTÅ system, particularly where ceiling heights, depths or layouts make BILLY alone less suitable. This approach allows for cleaner lines, improved storage options and a more refined built-in result.
- 03Yes — and this is where specialist fitting makes the biggest difference. Many Brighton and Sussex homes have uneven walls and ceilings. I use artisan-level scribing techniques to close gaps and adapt the installation to the room, ensuring a clean, built-in finish even in challenging spaces.
- 04Built-in BILLY bookcases work beautifully in: • Living rooms • Home offices • Bedrooms • Alcoves and chimney recesses • Hallways and landings Each installation is adapted to the room’s layout and proportions.
- 05Yes. I can advise on exact unit sizes, layouts and combinations before installation, helping you avoid ordering unsuitable components and ensuring the finished bookcase achieves the intended built-in look.
- 06Yes. All installations are fully secured and professionally anchored, ensuring safety, stability and long-term durability — especially important for taller bookcases or family homes.
- 07Costs vary depending on size, layout, and level of customisation. I provide a fixed-price quote within 48 hours, so you know exactly what to expect — with no hidden extras.
- 08I install built-in IKEA BILLY bookcases across Brighton, Hove and throughout Sussex.
- 09Yes. Through precision scribing, ceiling infills and tailored finishing panels, standard IKEA PAX units can be transformed into seamless fitted wardrobes that look original to your home.
- 10In most cases, yes — often saving thousands while achieving a similar high-end appearance.
- 11You purchase the units directly from IKEA. I handle installation, scribing and the built-in finish.
- 12Typically the final fitting and installation takes 1–3 days. However, total time from planning → design → build → installation depends on the complexity (number of units, custom panels, internal layout, extras like lighting). When we first talk, I’ll give you an estimate based on your space and requirements — I aim to be transparent so you know roughly when it’ll be done.
- 13Yes - uneven walls and ceilings are exactly where my work makes the biggest difference.
- 14Most of my projects are in Bighton, Hove and the surrounding Sussex area - particularly in period properties where alcoves and uneven walls are common. I cover East and West Sussex including Lewes, Worthing, Eastbourne, Tunbridge Wells, East Grinstead, Hastings and Crawley.
- 15In most cases — yes. I can work with standard rooms, alcoves, sloping ceilings or awkward spaces. The important thing is that I have accurate measurements (height, width, depth), and that we discuss any unique features (windows, radiators, skirting boards, sockets etc.) before I quote you. If a space is extremely irregular (very uneven walls, structural constraints, or major obstructions), I’ll flag that during our consultation and suggest whether a built-in Pax hack is realistic — or if a fully bespoke solution might be more appropriate.
- 16Absolutely! Simply request it via the form along with details of your wardrobe projects.
- 17You get full advantage of every bit of space — including awkward corners, alcoves or sloped ceilings — because I tailor the installation to your exact room.
- 18Because I install the wardrobe as a built-in fixture, it is more permanent than a standard freestanding wardrobe. That means: • It isn’t designed to be moved around easily. Removing it may cause damage to walls or require rework. • If you foresee frequent moves or want maximum flexibility, a freestanding option may suit you better. If you want flexibility in storage but still a clean look, I’m happy to discuss hybrid options — for example, configurations that are secure but could be adapted or partially dismantled in future.
- 19Here’s what I ask for when you request a quote: • Approximate & exact measurements of the space (width, height, depth). • Photos of the space (walls, floor, ceiling, skirting, any obstacles like windows or radiators). • Your desired internal layout — hanging rails, shelves, drawers, shoe racks, mirrors, etc. • Any special requests or features — built-in lighting, accessories, decorative panels, door style, handles, finish, etc. • Your timeline / preferred installation date (so I can check availability). That way I can give you a detailed and fair quote.
